PRESS RELEASE

“In Search of Lost Time” -

Highlights of the Central Bank’s Art Competitions 2021-2023

For over four decades, the annual High School and Open Call competitions have been the focal point and staple in the Bahamian cultural calendar. Even the Pandemic could not prevent this remarkable initiative from occurring uninterrupted from its inception in 1984 until today. However, from 2021 until 2023, the High School and Open Call competitions were held virtually, with the exhibitions displayed digitally on a virtual platform (https://www.artcentralbankbahamas.com/competitions).

As usual, the submitted artworks were exceptional and, again, an impressive attestation of the high quality and innovation in the Bahamian creative community. It seems logical that the highlights of the exhibitions, High School and Open Call, should be honoured in an in-person exhibition, which has been titled, “In Search of Lost Time.”

It will be the first time since 2013 that the winning pieces of the High School and Open Call competitions are presented together in the same exhibition. It should be compelling to see artwork from various media, age groups, and career stages displayed next to each other. Notably, some artists will even show works from successive competitions simultaneously. This long-term support is another indicator that shows the importance of the Central Bank’s art program as a significant incubator for the creative community.

The exhibition will take place in the William C. Allen Gallery, formerly Central Bank Art Gallery. In 1984, the art and culture initiative was incepted under Sir William Allen, the second Governor of the Central Bank of The Bahamas. This year, the Central Bank celebrates its 50th anniversary, and it seemed pertinent to rename the Gallery in honour of the late Sir William C. Allen.

Lastly, a reminder: the 2024 Competitions are still in full swing, and the deadline for submitting the artworks is Friday, 29th November 2024 (www.artcentralbankbahamas.com).

Opening: 7th November 2024

Time: 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM

Location: William C. Allen Gallery (formerly Central Bank Art Gallery)

Duration: 7th November until 20th December 2024
